At Glanford Electronics we have had a great deal of technical interest in Portable Appliance Testers and their use. To aid our customers in choosing a Portable Appliance Tester for their needs, we have gathered a collection of information from various sources. On this page there is a table showing various functions of some makes of PAT. This list is by no means complete, and we shall be extending it from time to time.

We have also assembled a guide on the use of Portable Appliance Testers which primarily applies to the UK. This can be downloaded in the form of a pdf file, and is available from our Pdf index page, along with a number of other Pdf files.

Rules and regulations of PAT testing can be a mystery. Why is Safety inspection and testing required? Who is responsible for portable appliance safety?
Download the pdf file, Portable Appliance Testing - Regulations (UK), which should answer some of your questions.

Quite a number of customers have asked us how to set out a results sheet for use in manual PAT testing situations. The one we use is quite simple, but does the job. You can download a copy from our Pdf page and print it our for your own use.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT PAT TESTER FOR YOUR NEEDS
Will you be testing for others?
Get the PAT with the widest range of tests. Some customer is bound to want ALL the tests available. If you want to do the minimum of testing the Martindale EasyPat1600 is the best and fastest solution.

Do you need a flash test?
Although the Electricity at work regulations don't specify it, some manufacturers recommend it. For hire shops and for roughly handled items (E.g. power tools), it is good practice. You need a EasyPat 2100 Micropat Plus, Supernova or PAT4/3DVF. Flash testing is more appropriate in a repair environment.

Testing 110V items?
You need Supernova, PAT4/3DV, or a Micropat Plus. The EasyPat 1600 is the low cost solution.

Testing office equipment?
Many manufacturers recommend a 25A earth test but this could damage some equipment especially if the earth path is via a data socket of along a printed circuit board track. If you need a "soft test" (low 100mA test) chose the Martindale EasyPat 1600 or one of the fully specified testers.

Is speed of testing critical?
The Martindale EasyPat 1600 is for manual testing or the Micropat Plus with downloading are the fastest testers.

Testing only on your own equipment?
Want the minimum legally required?

The Martindale EasyPat 1600 will give readings and provide a range of earth currents from 0.1A to 25A.

Do you want computerised records?
Above 400 items we suggest computerisation (Micropat+, Supernova, Europa or PAT4/3DV). Below 400, the Martindale EasyPat 1600 or Easypat2100 for speed and simplicity.

Remember to get the correct extension lead tester and other accessories.
